That may not seem like a very encouraging thought but the truth is that in this world we will have trials and tribulations. Life isn’t easy and life isn’t fair. Our spouses get sick, our kids have behavior issues, we experience job loss and bullying, our parents need assistance as they age and money is a constant need. God told us to Take heart and I believe He means for us to focus on our eternal destination not our present circumstances.

That may not seem like a very encouraging thought but the truth is that in this world we will have trials and tribulations. It’s a guarantee. Life isn’t easy and life isn’t fair. Our spouses get sick, our kids have behavior issues, we experience moving, marriage changes, and bullying, our parents need assistance as they age and money is a constant need. Jobs are lost, cars are broken down and friends move on. God told us in John 16:33, “In the world you will have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world” and I believe He means for us to focus on our eternal destination not our present circumstances. So much easier said than done though, believe me, I get it.

We all know that it’s easy to Praise God when things are going well but how can we praise Him when our world is falling apart? The very heart of worship is praising Him when the storm is raging. The truth is that this world is not our home so what we experience in the here and now is a temporary circumstance. It may not feel like it when everything around us feels like an endless negative crap storm but even then- you are never, ever, ever alone. When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were in the fiery furnace God did not deliver them from the fire but instead He stood with them as it burned all around. Sometimes life is burning all around us and we can’t see the exit. There’s a new song by Hillsong United, that talks about not being alone in the fire, I love the image of this. It’s called Another in the Fire and one of the stanzas reads:

There was another in the fire
Standing next to me
There was another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
Of how I’ve been set free
There is a cross that bears the burden
Where another died for me
There is another in the fire

God was in the midst of them, standing beside them and sharing in their trial. He is doing the same for you. You are not alone and this is true no matter how you feel, the facts are the same. God will never leave you or forsake you.

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” Deuteronomy 31:8

I gave this blog post a provocative title because the truth is that this life does bite-this world is full of evil and it can feel like everything is off the rails but take heart and don’t give up because God is on the throne! I started this blog on a particularly rough day and let’s just say, ahem, that I can be a little snarky at times. I know, shocking right? There was a little bit of angst when I titled it, maybe even a little woe-is- me pity party happening actually. But then-God. He showed up, He came for me, He held my hand through my trial.

Psalm 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me.”

We have this hope-in the person of Jesus Christ, someone to call upon and to turn to and He will rescue us. Even when it feels like everything has come undone you must hang on. Your help is coming! I want to point out though, while He didn’t rescue me from it, He did rescue me through it. The key difference here is that it might not look like what I had envisioned but it was more than what I needed.

God is trustworthy. He can be trusted to come through for us, and to be there when we are in need. Call out! Cry to Jesus,

“I call on the Lord who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies”

Psalm 18:3 God is telling us Himself that when we cry out to Him, when we call on Him, He will come running. This reminds me of one of my favorite parables, that of the lost sheep. Jesus relates the story of the Shepherd, who, when one of His sheep was found to be missing went out and looked for Him. In Luke 15:4-6. In point of fact, He left the other 99 sheep together while He searched for the one who was missing. This is so incredible when I relate it to the relentless pursuit God has for His lost sheep. He will drop everything and leave the 99 to go after you, the 1. His math is incredible, His love is pursuing, His kindness and care know no bounds. You, my friend, are the one whom the Shepherd will search after and seek until He finds. How much more will He show His true character by showing up when you call, by meeting the need you didn’t know you had, by holding you close in the storm. When the winds of life storm all around you remember God is holding you fast, enveloped within His arms, nothing can touch you there and you are Loved! Be encouraged that whatever trial you are undergoing, you are not alone, you are being held and led through it
